{"id":9,"date":"2016-05-05T19:57:54","date_gmt":"2016-05-05T19:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/trio\/home\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T19:30:25","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T19:30:25","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/academics\/programs-services\/trio\/","title":{"rendered":"TRIO Student Support Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ope\/trio\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO)<\/a><span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provide grants with the purpose of outreach and student services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Through a Department of Education grant competition, Saint Peter\u2019s University was awarded a five-year (2025-2030) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/grants-and-programs\/grants-higher-education\/trio\/student-support-services-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Support Services (SSS) grant<\/a> for $1.3 million to provide opportunities for academic development, assist students with college requirements, and motivate students toward successfully completing their degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is funded to serve 140 students annually. TRIO SSS is designed to assist students who are first-generation, from low-income backgrounds, and\/or have disabilities to persist in college until they earn their baccalaureate degrees. The goal of SSS is to increase retention and graduation rates of participants through quality interactions, clear expectations and pathways to academic preparedness.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"padding: 5px 15px 15px 15px;\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_6_T7M4-g28?si=NH2zUq4S83IYxUG0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What Does TRIO Support Services Do?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our mission at TRIO Support Services (SSS) is to give these underrepresented students an EDGE (Engage, Discover, Gain Experience, Excel). We provide many services thanks to these grants, including but not limited to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><strong>Grant Aid Awards:<\/strong> Extra financial support for those who qualify.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Summer Bridge Program (July):<\/strong> A jumpstart for first-year students to get connected and ready for college life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>One-on-One Advising:<\/strong> Personalized support with academics, career planning, and life decisions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Career Exploration:<\/strong> Hands-on guidance to help you explore majors and discover career options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Cultural &amp; Enrichment Activities:<\/strong> Opportunities to attend events and programs you might not experience otherwise.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Peer Mentoring:<\/strong> Learn from upper-level students who\u2019ve been where you are.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Help with Financial Aid &amp; Scholarships:<\/strong> Get support applying for aid, understanding your options, and finding scholarships.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Course Planning:<\/strong> Help choosing the right classes to stay on track and meet your goals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Grad School &amp; Professional Program Support:<\/strong> Guidance through the process of researching, preparing for, and applying to graduate programs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><strong>Learning community courses (LCCs):<\/strong> TRIO SSS students earn one college credit in TRIO Dynamics &amp; College Learning during the fall semester of their freshman year, and another college credit in TRIO Career Development during the fall semester of their sophomore year both of which count toward graduation credits.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Learn More about TRIO Support Services<\/h3>\n<p>Read more about TRIO by choosing an English or Spanish language flyer below.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/253\/files\/2025\/12\/TRIO-2025-Update.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/253\/files\/2025\/12\/trio-thumb.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"273\" height=\"161\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-240 \" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/253\/files\/2025\/12\/TRIO-2025-Update-Spanish.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/253\/files\/2025\/12\/trio-thumb-spanish.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"157\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-239 \" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><span style=\"font-color: red;\">Are You Eligible for TRIO Student Support Services?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who are eligible to participate in TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) are required to complete and <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.saintpeters.edu\/register\/?id=35f81957-4dc7-4c63-9d78-9beefe72d083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submit an application<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To determine if you are eligible to participate in TRIO SSS, consider first if you are first-generation, low-income and\/or have a learning or physical disability: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First-generation college student is defined as:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A student whose biological or adoptive parents have not received a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A student who, prior to the age of 18, regularly resided with and received support from only one parent and whose supporting parent did not receive a baccalaureate degree.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An individual who, prior to the age of 18, did not regularly reside with or receive support from a natural or an adoptive parent.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individual with a disability is defined as:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person who has a disability, as that term is defined in section 12102 of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/topics\/intro-to-ada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Americans with Disabilities Act<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(42 U.S.C. 12101 et seq.).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low-income individual is defined as:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An individual whose family\u2019s taxable income did not exceed 150 percent of the poverty level amount in the calendar year preceding the year in which the individual initially participated in the project. <\/span><\/li>\n<li>Please use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/about\/ed-offices\/ope\/trio\/federal-trio-programs-current-year-low-income-levels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Federal TRIO Program Current-Year Low-Income Levels chart<\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to determine if you are eligible as part of this category.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are unsure about meeting the requirements, contact the TRIO SSS by phone (201) 761-6293 or email <a href=\"mailto:triosss@saintpeters.edu\">triosss@saintpeters.edu<\/a>. Check with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saintpeters.edu\/academics\/programs-services\/disability-services\/\">Disability Services<\/a> regarding accommodations or questions about disability status.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>What Do You Need to Fill Out Your TRIO Application?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to accurately and efficiently review your TRIO application, please be sure to have the following available prior to <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.saintpeters.edu\/register\/?id=35f81957-4dc7-4c63-9d78-9beefe72d083\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filling out the application<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you identify as an individual with a disability, you must share documentation of a physical and\/or learning disability via a doctor\u2019s note or other documentation from someone currently treating you. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you identify as a low-income student, you will need to provide your family\/household\u2019s annual taxable income and the number of people claimed in your household on last year\u2019s IRS Income Tax Form, including yourself.
